The First Clients

The first client stories will always be the most vivid in my memory.  

One of the first women I met was Lucia.*

Lucia was 14 years old.

She was six weeks pregnant when she booked her first appointment.  

She wanted to go through with her pregnancy, but she had no resources, no support and didn't know what to do.  

We connected Lucia with a school that enabled her to continue her education after she had given birth to her son, Xavier**. She was able to complete her high school certificate and begin to look at her options at TAFE, whilst breastfeeding and learning the basics of parenting through our counselling and case management programs.  

Lucia was one of my first Diamonds, and Xavier was the first of many precious babies that have been born into our Diamond family.  

16 years later, hundreds more have joined the family—but I often think about the early days and the impact these stories have on the model of care we provide today.  

You have probably heard of the saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’? Well in our experience, it also takes a village to support a woman and her partner facing an unplanned pregnancy.  

The reality is that in the past year alone we have seen a 93% increase in demand for our services. We can’t keep up. We need more staff, more resources—and we want our services to remain free of charge, but this all costs money.
